There is no doubt that England have improved with Southgate at the helm, but there is a general feeling that he has taken them as far as he can from a tactical viewpoint. Potter and Howe both play an attacking brand of football and may be better suited to the current crop of players, whose talents lie in the final third rather than their own half.
